Age: 8 weeks

Sex: male

Date: 26 Apr 2019

Place: Southwark, South London

Amina-Faye Johnson died following abuse, but her cause of death could not be determined and it could not be determined who had caused her injuries.

She had more than 60 bone fractures in her body, including 41 rib fractures. 24 other fractures were found in her arms and legs.

Her parents were convicted of causing or allowing her to suffer serious physical harm, but no one was convicted for causing her death after medics were unable to establish a cause of death.

Amina-Faye Johnson was said to have undergone continued physical abuse.

However, her parents claimed that her injuries were caused by the paramedics that attended her.

They called 999 on the morning of 26 April 2019 when Amina-Faye Johnson stopped breathing and paramedics arrived within minutes, however, Amina-Faye Johnson died at the scene.

It was first noted that Amina-Faye Johnson showed no outwardly visible signs of injury and that it was first thought that she had suffered a Sudden Unexplained Death in Infancy. Further, further x-ray analysis revealed a catalogue of wounds, some of which were recent, whilst others had started to heal.

It was heard that following Amina-Faye Johnson's death that her parents had repeatedly lied about the circumstances of her death.

They suggested that Amina-Faye Johnson might have died due to vaccines that she had been given by her doctor the day before.

Examination of her parent’s phones revealed that they had been in a manipulative and abusive relationship in which they had slapped another child and denied him water because he had soiled himself.

It was heard that the mother had called 111 to report Amina-Faye Johnson coughing blood, but that when a doctor had called back and told her to get the father to get his wife to take Amina-Faye Johnson to hospital, he failed to do so.

It was further heard that following Amina-Faye Johnson's death that her father forged a letter from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, a role that did not exist, telling the police that any proceedings were, 'not in order'.

He also called the police and pretended to be a neighbour, making comments that he hoped would shift the blame from him to his wife.

When the judge sentenced her parents, he said, 'Medics could not establish a cause of death of 'this poor child' and it was not possible to lay blame on which parent caused the fatal injuries and who stood back and allowed it to happen'.

However, he noted that the evidence showed that her injuries were non-accidental and that force would have been needed to be applied to cause them, noting that her injuries were deliberate and vicious injuries. The judge further noted that her worst injury, to her right thigh bone, could only have been caused by a brutal attack. He said, 'The femur is not easy to break and significant force was used to fracture it'.

Amina-Faye Johnson's father was sentenced to eight and a half years whilst her mother was sentenced to seven years.
